Consumer Goods and Retail Labelling and Warnings
SGS can verify the labelling and warnings applied to toys to ensure their compliance with the EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC.
The Toy Safety Directive, in force since July 20, 2011, strengthens the rules relating to labelling and warnings on toys. In addition to the Directive’s mandatory requirements, the harmonised standards also specify that warnings should accompany certain categories of toys. Our toy safety technical teams can support the development and application of labelling and warnings to your toys.
All toys sold in Europe must meet the legal requirements set out in the toy directive and carry the CE mark “in a visible, legible and indelible form” on the toy. In certain circumstances, the mark may also appear on product packaging. Our CE marking conformity assessment services will help you to achieve compliance and earn the right to display the CE mark on qualifying toys.
When used on a toy, the CE mark must measure at least 5 mm, must be placed directly onto the product (if this is not possible or not warranted because of the nature of the product, it must be placed onto the packaging and accompanying documents), and it must be easily visible, readable and permanent.
To comply with the requirements of EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC, warnings must meet several requirements to ensure the appropriate and safe use of toys. We can help you to ensure compliance with requirements relating to:
- Location of warnings
- Specific warnings – minimum and maximum ages and weights for users, if a toy needs to be used under supervision of an adult
- ‘Not suitable for children under 36 months’ specific criteria
- Visibility and legibility of warnings
Working across the European market, and with manufacturers from around the world, we can also advise on the most appropriate language, or languages, to use on toy labels/packaging for your target markets.
